Product Information
Cacao, from the cacao tree, has been used for centuries by indigenous peoples in Meso and South America for its highly healing properties. 'Kakaw', as it is also called, or 'food of the gods' is a feminine spirit. The Aztecs linked cacao with Tlaloc, the god of rain and fertility. They believed that consuming cacao would give them strength and wisdom, allowing them to connect with the spiritual world.
The fruits look like elongated pumpkins or legumes. They are harvested and then cracked open. In the center of the fruit are the cacao beans - the basis for ceremonial raw cacao and also chocolate as we know it in the West. Each fruit contains 40-50 beans of about one gram each. Annually, a cacao tree produces an average of one to two kilograms of beans.
Originally, cacao was used in various religious and spiritual rituals as sacred food and a gift from the gods. If you want to know more about religious and spiritual rituals around birth and death, read this blog. But the most common use of cacao was in the form of a drink. Indigenous peoples prepared a bitter drink called "chocolatl" or "chocolātl," which was made by roasting, grinding, and mixing cacao beans with water, spices, and sometimes chili peppers for extra flavor. Quite different from the sweet chocolate drinks we know today. In some cultures, cacao was even used as a currency. Cacao beans were highly valued and used for trade and barter or to pay taxes. Cacao was also valued for its medicinal properties. Indigenous peoples believed that the drink made from cacao offered various health benefits, including energy-boosting properties and the ability to treat diseases. For example, Mexican healers use cacao to cure insect bites and bronchitis. In other cultures, cacao is used as a remedy for cavities, rheumatism, and insomnia, and for good digestion.
It is a beautiful heart opener full of healing and neurocognitive benefits. It is a real 'superfood' and is packed with antioxidants and minerals. It stimulates the production of dopamine and serotonin, making you happy, lowering your stress, improving your concentration and creativity, supporting your body's natural healing process, detoxifying, and boosting your immune system. Microdosing with cacao is a gentle way to strengthen the connection with yourself, others, and the world. It is often used for ceremonies, meditation, and spiritual growth. It can also help in processing emotions and traumas and can promote a deeper connection with nature. In this powerful tincture, we have bottled all these properties with an extract of raw dried peel of the cacao bean sustainably harvested from various places in Central or South America with respect for nature, humans, and animals.*
The Beneficial Components
Cacao is one of the so-called "superfoods" and contains about 300 different substances, making it an extremely complex food product. It is impossible to name all the components. Here is a list of the most notable and interesting substances in raw cacao:
Flavonoids: according to scientific research, the cacao plant is the richest in antioxidants. It contains about 10% flavonoids (a type of antioxidant), which is about 3 times more than in green tea and 20 times more than in roasted cocoa powder. Antioxidants protect you from free radicals.
Anandamide: a substance naturally present in the brain and linked to feelings of happiness. It is the substance released in a runner's high and can give a euphoric feeling.
Tryptophan: reduces stress and makes you feel happy. This substance works on your serotonin, the neurotransmitter that positively influences your mood. Tryptophan in raw cacao stimulates the production of this endorphin, another happiness substance.
Phenylethylamine (PEA): in cacao gives a feeling of being in love, happy, and excited. This is converted into dopamine for, among other things, an increased feeling of happiness, the reward system, concentration, decision-making, and muscle control. Dopamine is also important for connecting with others: it increases your libido and phenylethylamine can make you feel in love.
Theobromine: cacao also contains significant amounts of theobromine (1-2%). Theobromine stimulates the central nervous system and the heart, relaxes muscles, dilates blood vessels, and has a diuretic effect.
Magnesium: raw cacao is one of the best sources of magnesium, a mineral that many women do not get enough of. Magnesium is essential for your energy production, a healthy brain, and a well-functioning nervous system. It also maintains strong muscles, bones, and teeth and keeps your blood pressure at a healthy level.
Iron: cacao is also a good source of iron. Not only important for your blood to transport oxygen throughout your body but also to transport other minerals such as potassium, zinc, manganese, and selenium.
